Melodies of Happiness - Festival Palazetto Bru Zane

When the Palazzetto Bru Zane group turned its attention to the little-known works of Camille Saint-Saëns in 2015, they were quickly intrigued by the presentation of a series of melodies with orchestra, in the tradition of Berlioz's famous Nuits d'été. How could such a body of work have remained unpublished for so long? Research soon revealed a musical continent that still seems infinite, written by Fauré, Chausson, Massenet, Franck, Gounod as well as Dubois, Hahn and Guilmant. To accompany the return to the repertoire of these intimate pieces, five soloists and the Orchestre de chambre de Paris conducted by Hervé Niquet will perform a selection of "symphonic" melodies with a myriad of nuances.

Glière with the Oslo Philharmonic and Klaus Mäkelä

Lightheartedness meets Conflict

Klaus Mäkelä conducts three works written in the Soviet Union by composers with very different relationships to the regime: Peteris Vasks from Latvia, Reinhold Gliere from Ukraine, and Dmitri Shostakovich from Russia.

Reinhold Gliere (1875–1956) was born in Kiev and was said to have Belgian, Polish and German roots. In contrast to many of his Russian contemporaries, Gliere turned his back on the West. After 1917, he never left the Soviet Union, but was a frequent traveller to regions such as Siberia and Uzbekistan. His music has a timeless, conservative character, and was very popular in his native country. French harpist Emmanuel Ceysson is the soloist in Gliere’s bubbling, light-hearted harp concert from 1938.
